Hello ESL Newcomers!
It’s the middle of March and you’re trying to get your students prepared for that big, bad state test. You know – the one your career rests upon. The one where you will be rated “you suck” or “you suck less.” So … you’re madly reviewing central idea or fractions or whatever when your admin steps in and cheerfully announces a new student. And by the way, they don’t speak any English.
Now, you have some choices. You can sit the student in the back of the room and hope your admin won’t notice. You can throw them on some free language learning app and hope your ESL Newcomer won’t fall asleep from boredom (and your admin won’t notice). You can put them on an English Learner website containing cute pictures of baby animals and hope your older ESL learner won’t feel too embarrassed. You can pair them up with a student who speaks their home language and hope this amazing, multi-tasking student can provide free translation services and ace the big, bad test. …. Or, you can differentiate instruction with the No English Newcomer Pack.
Whether you’re an ESL or content teacher, this will be your go-to resource for your older elementary to high-school level beginner level English Language Learner. It is or me. I always have a packet handy for that middle of the year admit or the ESL student who needs extra support. It’s also great for a quick assessment, fast finishers, or bell-ringers. Your admin will be impressed with your amazing differentiation abilities!
And, if you’re one of those lucky teachers who have one-to-one technology, save paper and use the Google Drive version. It’s your choice.
